Overview

Motivational Interviewing (MI) Training introduces foundational principles and core skills used to support engagement, communication, and behavior change through a collaborative, goal-oriented approach. MI is a skillset that can be applied across all stages of criminal justice practice, including intake, assessment, supervision, and case management, to encourage pro-social skill development and sustained behavior change.

MI is a skill-based approach that strengthens over time through continued practice, reinforcement, and real-world use in both client-facing and supervisory contexts.

Blended Learning Format

Training is 16 total hours delivered through a blended format of self-paced online learning and live Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT).

Completion of all self-paced modules and full attendance in the live session are required to receive a certificate of completion.

Self-Paced Pre-Work (Online Classroom)

The self-paced component includes 10 hours of online learning focused on foundational MI concepts, communication strategies, and core techniques. All modules are available on Day 1 and are completed at the participant’s own pace. This work must be completed before attending the first live virtual session.

Live Virtual Instructor-Led Training

The live training component includes 6 hours of VILT delivered across two 3-hour sessions. These sessions focus on applied practice, interactive case studies, and practical exercises that build foundational skills for developing and implementing case plans that support behavior change and improve client outcomes.
