Go Press Play
Just because we are adults, it does not mean we have to make life all about work. Play invites imagination and develops higher cognitive function with children, but the benefits can vary as adults. For example, creating opportunities for recreation in our lives can help our relationships, job, and overall mood.
Play is one of the most valuable tools for keeping relationships fresh. By making a conscious effort to include more humor and play into your daily interactions, you can help improve your relationships. Play helps improve social skills and encourages cooperation with others. The lightheartedness and humor that go with play can help strengthen relationships through positive interactions and laughter. You cannot enjoy a laugh with other people unless you take the time to engage with them. Humor and playful communication strengthen relationships by fostering happy feelings and emotional connections. A lively point of view and laughter are contagious.
Bring humor into conversations at work by asking people, “What’s something funny that happened to you this week?” Or when you hear laughter in the office, join in and ask, “What’s funny?” People are typically happy to share something humorous because it allows them to laugh again, and because it feels good to make someone else laugh. Relieve stress at lunch or during breaks by shooting hoops, playing cards, or completing word puzzles together. Taking a break and playing at work refreshes your body and mind to stay productive when returning to your tasks. Find ways to build playtime into your workday and squash boredom while bonding with coworkers.
Find your inner child. Be available for a fun activity, do something that feels silly, or play with a pet. Start with the intention of having fun and see where it leads you. It is hard to be unhappy when you are seeking out laughter and good times. Experience new things or go back to something you enjoyed as a child, like riding a bike, swimming, bowling, or miniature golf. Your version of play could mean collecting coins, throwing around a frisbee, reading a book, or hiking. Some people may seem more playful than others; the overall goal is to create a positive mood and outcome.
The capability to play, laugh, and have fun makes life more enjoyable. It helps with problem-solving, building relationships, and positive thinking. People who incorporate play and humor into their lives find that it renews their zest for life. As play and laughter become integrated into your life, new opportunities for fun will occur daily, and eventually, you will view the world from a more positive perspective.
